“Inspired by the book Pink Ribbons, Inc.: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy by Samantha King, Pink Ribbons, Inc. shows how some companies use breast cancer cause-marketing to boost sales, while often contributing only a tiny fraction of proceeds to the cause. It also explores how companies that pollute or sell products containing dangerous chemicals are in on the action, too, using “pink washing” to polish their images, and even shaping the direction of cancer research. The end result is that the environmental causes of breast cancer have been largely ignored, with only a minuscule fraction of the funds going to prevention research.”

Pink Ribbons, Inc. also takes us back to the questionable origins of the ubiquitous ribbon. Charlotte Haley was a 68-year-old American woman using peach-coloured ribbons to specifically call attention to the lack of funding for breast cancer prevention. When a cosmetics giant wanted in, Haley refused, because she believed that the company was out to boost profits rather than help women. But she couldn’t stop them when they changed the colour of the ribbon to pink.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters

A letter from Nic Ahola, the Ambassador for this years Bowl for Kids Sake event held on March 3, 2012 in Richmond Hill

Charitable #106793888RR001

Hello friends:
I am excited to announce that I will once again be the Ambassador for this years Bowl for Kids Sake event held on March 3, 2012 in Richmond Hill. As we gear up for our largest fundraiser of the year, BBBSY and I would like to invite you to be part of this great event. As one of the leading children’s charities, our services continue to be much in demand and most beneficial to the children and families who need It.
Our Bowl for Kids Sake campaign consists of 8 bowling events across York Region and Bradford/West Gwillimbury during February and March. Our event attracts more than 1,000 bowlers who raise money through pledges. The success of this campaign is absolutely vital in order to continue the valuable mentoring programs that are delivered to boys and girls throughout York Region and Bradford/West Gwillimbury.
We are writing to invite you to become a sponsor, or put together a team or donate a prize for our Bowl for Kids Sake 2012 campaign. We have started working on the campaign and your participation will enable us to offer prizes to the participants who are kind enough to help raise funds. As well, we also invite your company or business to participate by putting a team together and joining in the fun. All donations will be recognized at the event and in the Wrap –Up Newsletter.
Please do not hesitate to contact the BBBSY office (905-726-2149 x 305) or myself at nic@snaprichmondhill.com if you wish to discuss these opportunities or require further information.
We look forward to counting you among our supporters for 2012.

Yours truly,

Nic Ahola
