Valerie shows you how to use familiar materials in new ways. You’ll create textured paintings in three dimensions with various types of oriental paper such as filament, mulberry and rice. Then apply a little magic with acrylic gel medium, eggshells, cheesecloth, rose petals, gesso, watercolour and acrylic to your 200 lb. watercolour paper base – and abracadabra! – the unexpected becomes a representational or abstract painting, your choice. Suitable for all levels. Materials list provided.

Valerie Kent is a Richmond Hill artist who paints in watercolours, acrylics, oils and mixed media. She presents workshops to art societies and at colleges throughout Ontario as well as offering regular courses in watercolour and oil painting at the Mill Pond Gallery in Richmond Hill, ON and at her studio. Her work is in many collections worldwide and she has shown her work in solo, juried, and group shows for many years as well as being represented by commercial galleries.
Or how to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse or vice versa. In this case we will be turning artists’ quality tissue paper into something beautiful and startling: crystalline papers and also brayer papers created by using acrylic mediums and gesso, plus acrylic ink, acrylic paint, iridescent paint, glitter, stencils and stamping. Also included will be found papers and oriental papers. There will be several demonstrations and you will have a chance to decorate your own self-created papers. You will use this paper by adding it to your collage. Your collage can be designed using traditional, textured and found papers, feathers, tiny glass beads, inks, acrylic paint, plant materials, and sand on stretched canvas or illustration board or gessoed heavy watercolour paper. We will work with this year’s theme “Music” which can be abstract, realistic or symbolic. Each piece will be entirely unique and will never have been seen before. Suitable for all levels.
Tuition: Tuition for this workshop is $80/Per student. There will be a cancellation fee of 25% charged after September 4, 2009 on tuition fees and accommodation fees.
Accommodation: $111.00 per person (including taxes), per day, double occupancy; includes three meals per day, unlimited use of studio and on-site facilities. Guests are required to provide their own sheets (single bed) and towels. Please also bring a flashlight. No pets. All cabins are smoke free. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain is uneven. We are unable to accommodate individual specific dietary needs.
Check in between 4:00pm – 6:00.pm. Dinner at 6:30pm. Introductory class in the evening.

This multi media course is a wonderful way to excite young artists. Watercolour, acrylic, drawing, pastels, and a number of other media done on various supports make up this program.
